The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) is the leading European professional medical oncology organization comprising a network of more than 5,000 oncology professionals in over 100 countries. As a society ESMO is committed, among other objectives, to improve the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, supportive, and palliative care of patients with malignant disorders; to advance the art, science, recognition, and practice of oncology; to promote education in oncology in order to ensure a high standard of qualification of medical oncologists within the multidisciplinary team; and to promote equal access to optimal cancer care of all cancer patients. This is a high call and we are fully committed to our missions and goals. In order to fulfill our mission, ESMO’s strategic plan, 2009–2012 calls for specific strategic choices in several areas that are considered fundamental pillars of our society, namely: Community, Education, Practice career and support, Research, Public policy, and Organization and Governance.
Professor Jose Baselga
Professor Baselga is President of ESMO. He is also Chairman, Medical Oncology Service and Director of the Division of Medical Oncology, Hematology, and Radiation Oncology, Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, Barcelona, Spain and Professor of Medicine, Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain. His main research interest is in Clinical Breast Cancer and in Translational and Early Clinical Research in the area of Growth Factor Receptors and Downstream Molecules as Targets for Breast Cancer Therapy Awards.
Alan Howard
Alan Howard was appointed as CEO of ESMO in April 2009. He has spent over 20 years of his professional life in France after formal training as a Barrister-at-Law at London University. He held several positions as Legal Counsel in the UK followed by a position as Legal and Regulatory Affairs Director in France. For 10 years he worked as Managing Director of a leading medical device consulting firm in Europe until being appointed Group Chief Executive of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) based in Sophia Antipolis Cedex, France. When Mr. Howard began at ESC in 1998 with a staff of 26 employees, the ESC Annual Congress was the Society’s only product. Under his leadership the Society has grown to 125 employees and the ESC Annual Meeting is now recognized as the largest scientific meeting in Europe and the largest cardiology meeting in the world. In addition, ESC has become a leading provider of scientific products, education, guidelines, surveys and journals. Mr. Howard has also enjoyed success in political circles and has helped advance the cause of prevention in Europe, leading to the establishment of the European Heart Health Charter.
